As an addition to the above:

It seems that the format of the custom field identifier depends on the type of object you request. Tickets return the CF.{FieldName} style (new style according to source code) while users return the CF-FieldName style (old style). For queues and other object types I don't know which format is prefferred.

For writing I only did that on tickets and had success with the new style, the old style didn't work. On users I did not try it yet.
