mod_fcgid is a replacement for FastCGI. This seems to be a good idea, as fastcgi seems to be out of development. mod_fcgid generally works, but is known to need some more work to be as stable as fastcgi or all the other version.
At the time of this writing, I'd recommend using fastcgi and the configuration described on FastCGIConfiguration.
debian/unstable doesn't offer libapache2-mod-fastcgi anymore. An older package of this module (working fine with apache 2.0.55) is attached for archival.
